Sporting Penistone, South Yorkshire

Each week in the lead up to the Tour De Yorkshire, we’re shining the spotlight on some of the fantastic Yorkshire Bank Bike Libraries who are located on this year’s race route. This week, we're looking at one of our newer libraries, Sporting Penistone in South Yorkshire...

Nestled along Thurlstone Road, the Sporting Penistone Bike Library is located directly on this year's Stage 3 of the Tour De Yorkshire route. As the peloton races towards the finish at Fox Valley, look out for them as it passes through the pretty village of Penistone.

Only recently launched, the library is hoping that the Tour's presence in the area, along with the better weather of spring and summer, will help develop local interest in cycling as an activity.

Set within Penistone Leisure Centre, Sporting Penistone is actually the name of the community group founded to re-open the centre after it was originally closed in 2011 due to council cut-backs. Formed by an entirely voluntary board of local residents and users of the facility, this truly is a community project if ever there was one.

Since opening, the team has been working on a web page for the library to add to the main leisure centre website, as well as organising a dedicated email address and telephone number for the initiative. Offering a good selection of activities already, the team is hoping that a Bike Library will enhance the leisure centre's standing in the community, and encourage cycling amongst children and adults alike.

The premises have been suitably decked out in the signature blue and yellow bunting of the Tour, and the leisure centre is holding a special TDY event on the day. It's safe to say there's plenty of interest locally in the race!

Be sure to look out for it en route, or get in touch with them and borrow a bike if you're in the area, or planning to be at some time in the future.
