Each week in the lead up to the 2018 Tour de Yorkshire, we’re shining the spotlight on some of the fantastic Yorkshire Bank Bike Libraries who are located on this year’s race route. This week it’s Coast and Dale Bike Library in Scarborough…

Launched on a sunny summer day last year, the Coast and Dale Yorkshire Bank Bike Library has since helped dozens of families and children discover the joy of riding a bike.

With its main base at the charity Basics Plus, in Salisbury Street, Scarborough, the bike library also offers guided rides, bike skills sessions and bike maintenance courses.

Through the scheme, which is run in partnership with Scarborough and Ryedale Community Cycling, old and unwanted bikes are donated at donation stations at Basics Plus, Northstead Community Primary School, in Maple Drive, Yorkshire Coast Sight Support, in Dean Road, the Alzheimer's Society at Manor Court, Bike About Filey, and Big Bear Bikes, in Pickering. They are then repaired and restored by mechanics before being loaned out to children and families for free.

The bike library is also working with Yorkshire Coast Sight Support to develop cycling opportunities for those who are visually impaired.

Manager Rob Brown says: "The bike library has been growing really nicely and has been really popular with people taking part in cycling events.

"With such a stunning coastline and great cycle routes nearby, the bike library is also really popular with people visiting relatives on the coast and borrowing a bike while they're here.

"We've had some great bikes donated so far, some of which have been in really good condition. We'd like to expand the project and open more donation stations all over the area."

To celebrate the Tour de Yorkshire finishing in Scarborough for the third year running, the bike library is taking part in The Final Mile - a community ride taking in the final mile of the first stage of the race, crossing the finish line shortly before the elite riders arrive - to support the race's official charity, the Alzheimer's Society.
